'Bimbo' eyes Blue Magic
published: Tuesday | June 26, 2007

FORMER champion jockey, Emelio Rodriquez, has approached trainer Philip Feanny to partner BLUE MAGIC in the July 7 Jamaica St. Leger.

Rodriquez's proposal seems to have sparked some interest in Feanny, who has moved from a definite 'no' to indecision as to whether he would start BLUE MAGIC in the St. Leger.

BLUE MAGIC bypassed the 12-furlong Jamaica Derby and his stablemate RUM TALK's loss to THE BOMBER was partly blamed on Feanny not having a second runner with a strong early pace in the event.

The many-time champion trainer recently responded by saying he did not run people's horses as rabbits but could be forced to approach owner David Willers following THE BOMBER's front-running Derby victory.

BLUE MAGIC has won two sprint races since the Governor's Cup, awarded the last one in the stewards' room on Derby Day while his stablemate RUM TALK took his chances at 12 furlongs in the big race.

Meanwhile, veteran trainer Allan E. 'Billy' Williams has ruled out any chance of his unbeaten filly, OUTSTANDING, racing in the St. Leger.

OUTSTANDING, who debuted on May 26, is owned by Roylton D'Cambre and has won two races with a combined margin of 28 lengths.

Punters were hoping for a repeat of the RAGS TO RICHES story in the United States, where Todd Pletcher's filly won the Belmont Stakes, the final leg of the Triple Crown, beating Preakness-winner CURLIN by a head.

However, Williams says he isn't about to play hero with the talented filly.

"It's much too early," he said. "She cannot run there. She got delayed from last year and did not get back into training properly."

Williams, who has the top-rated horse in the country, MIRACLE MAN, tucked away safely in his barn, said OUTSTANDING will be made to climb the stakes ladder.

"She started racing late and whatever progress she makes, I'll be only too glad. I'm not jumping the gun to go into a classic race.

"She will next race against non-winners-of-three," he pointed out.

Williams says there'll be no local 'Rags To Riches'
